Chipko Movement

Chipko Chipko A non-violent forest conservation movement that originated in India in the 1970s; where v illagers, particularly women, opposed commercial logging and government deforestation policies. Protesters used non-violent tactics, notably embracing trees (Chipko means "to hug" in Hindi), to impede loggers. The movement aimed to protect local forests, which were vital for their livelihoods and the environment. It emerged in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh) in 1973. Legacy includes increased environmental awareness, empowerment of local communities, and pioneering ecofeminist ideas.

Change Comes From the Margins

A privileged, relaxed man would never want to change anything.

WAVES OF COMPASSION: Making of a Documentary Film

Laying down ones life for another has more meaning than just dying, it also means to understand, to show up, to stand with, and to reach out. Covid-19 put us in unprecedented times. Nobody had all the answers or supplies. With muster-seed faith they began with what they had, may be only a few loaves, but, what happened next is a miracle. Covid -19 WAVES OF COMPASSION is a documentary short film shot during the first wave of Covid-19 in India. Here I break down its process and narrative style. Watch the film here:  Waves of Compassion   In the thick of the first wave of covid-19 I was asked by the CRI, Bangalore, to make a documentary film on their involvement with the Pandemic emergency. It meant visiting six plus shelter camps, visiting all food cooking and distribution chains, from the heart of the city to the very end of the suburbs. It would also mean coming in direct contact with a lot of people. I agreed. I began with the first day, almost fully covered, when I returned home in

A Logo For an Event Is Made to Target Only the Attendees.

Logos make sense to the people who knows the philosophy, ideology and spirituality of the organisation. Certain logos are made to connect and impact an inner circle of people. Only they understand the reference and image used in the logo. Its perfectly okay when measuring the impact of a designer. All may understand the literal meaning of the signifiers. But what the individual images and the image as a whole communicate may not be understood. Here is an example of a logo created for the Franciscans for their provincial chapter. It made sense to them in that context and with the knowledge of Franciscan spirituality.  the theme given for designing: listen . discern . go forth here is how i have used the signifiers and what they are meant to signify. Listen : Francis, for his time, heard the voice / listened to Jesus' words from San Damiano cross at the wayside chapel, saying to him, go repair my church. today, for our times, metaphorically, we got to lend our ears to the same cross

How I Designed FLAME Logo

Designing  a logo is a process of make people understand an organisation to its bare essence. As a client briefs you about the company/organisation, name and its nature of work, your mind begins find images that would represent the organisation.  in this case it was an NGO working for the well-being of HIV AIDS patients and those affected by it.   The brief given to me by the organisation is  FLAME  Franciscans Life Affirming Movement for Empowerment   We are not going to restrict ourselves to HIV/AIDS ministry. We are planning to spread our ministry to various areas such as environmental programmes, Children and youth programme, women self-help groups and so on. Therefore think of any logo that symbolises giving life  (light) to the people and the earth (environment). Try to make is simple and attractive.   The motto could be added to the logo. "LET THERE BE LIGHT"   Its not a sophisticated brand or service, so my mind lingered around images of flame and its light spreading

Education Must Develop Character and Competence

Every attempt at education must be an attempt at developing ones character to be a better person. Indian Institute of Psychology and Research has a logo which illustrates it.

The journey behind designing a logo for 'SEEKER'S CAFE'

What is common for both coffee and a journey-of-seeking? Both are magical. They transport us to another space. Coffee does it mentally; and journey does it physically.   Coffee + Journey + Magic The mental creative Process After receiving the Brief Imaging Abstraction  Idealising   then it goes it into Production   according to the clients need. What kind of logo ? Pictorial? Word?  What tagline? For which people? Who should understand it and feel connected and compelled to walk in? What are their ideologies? Political, social and other affiliations? In what Context? Where is the cafe? In a corporate office? By a happening pub? Or in a particular campus?

Jesus the Guru in Buddhist Meditative Posture

Jesus the Guru at St. Anthonys Shrine Jesus the Guru, in Buddhist meditative posture, at St. Anthony’s Shrine in St. Anthony’s Friary campus, in Bangalore, expresses the modern, inclusive inter-religious Indian Christian Psyche -thanks to constant inter-religious interactions and dialogues that is happening. This perhaps is the result of the search by serious Indian Christian theologians and artists to have an image of Jesus that people of India can relate to. We could call it an Indian Jesus.  Here in the shrine, this large sized relief work of serene image of Jesus has a cathartic effect on people who arrive here with various difficulties and challenges of everyday life. This central image of Jesus gives direction to, scattered, and at times misdirected, personal Christian devotions to saints and other pieties.

An Indian Temple

Water colour with a difference. I wetted the paper, instead of wetting the colours. And before the paper got dried I had to finish this painting. The lighter shades first and then the darker shades. Then the human figures...

The Earth Beneath His Feet: My First Film (2008)

This is a short-film which explores issues concerning the earth, ecology, environment, and our difficult relationship with them. Environment The Plot: The protagonist, an archetype of modern man, has to face a few hard facts. He had achieved much more than what death could kill. But he feared ‘the six feet of earth’ to where he, like any other mortal, must return. He had a reason to fear. He tried everything at death -he denied… he was angry… he argued… he bargained… and finally the inevitable happened. Watch the full film here  The Earth Beneath His Feet  (15.5 minutes) The Earth Beneath His Feet is   screened and discussed at Voices from the Waters International Film Festival. It is also catalogued by Film Division India. The Thought Process 2008, the issue of farmers’ suicide was on the peek in India. I wanted to make a film on that. I began reading. I got the statistics and stories. My mind began to wander around the question of ‘why’. Why did farmers, who managed their life for
